The Edge program continues to perform well in weekend competition.  In addition to the 11u taking the “King of the Mountain” title last week in Albany, the 12u West also went 4-0 winning the title for their age group.  In Hershey this weekend, all of the teams turned in great performances.

Three teams went undefeated in the Susquehanna Slam, hosted in Harrisburg Pennsylvania (Hershey).  The 11u, 12u West, and 13u compiled a combined 15-0 record.  The 15u, both 14u’s, and the 12u East also had great showings.  “Our teams are playing some great basketball,” commented Jim Santoro, the program’s director.  “I am pleased with the overall execution on both ends of the court,” he added.  Although the Edge teams looked very sharp defensively, it was the offense that seemed to carry the day in many of the games. “We were able to put some points up on the board this weekend,” said Coach Peek.  “I think we are ready for Nationals,” he added.

The 12u West continued its roll, breaking every program record in the book.  With four tournament championships behind them, the are currently sporting a perfect 22-0 record.  “It’s by far the most successful team record wise in program history,” coach Santoro said.  Although an impressive record, it’s not the wins that matter.  The 12u West have represented the program very well by taking their success in stride and keeping the wins in perspective.  “The kids recognize that there are many teams out there capable of beating us by 30 or more points,” coach Santoro said.  That may be so, but it’s still a tremendous accomplishment.  This weekend, the 12u’s found themselves in many difficult situations, being down by as much as 10 points in the second half.  “Our kids certainly demonstrated poise and determination this weekend.  We could have easily folded up our tents and gone home with some loses,” coach Santoro said.  But the team gutted it out with some tough defense down the stretch.

Yes, the 12u West is undefeated.  But let’s not get too hung up on one team’s record.  The Edge continues to be recognized by many not as a program power, but as a program with class that demonstrates respect for their opponents.  “I hear many comments from officials and other coaches about how well our athletes carry themselves on and off the court,” said coach Verdis.  “Its a credit to all of our teams, athletes, and parents to be able to garner such a great reputation wherever we go,” he added.

The Edge will bring that reputation to the East Coast Nationals in a couple of weeks.  In the meantime, all of the teams will enjoy some time off this week as the July 4th holiday approaches.  And then, as coach Peek commented, “Bring on Shippensburg!”
